Understanding the Family Law Consultation Process

Thinking about divorce, establishing or modifying custody, parenting time and/or support?  Considering family law mediation? Here’s exactly what happens in your consultation with me.

I know reaching out to an attorney can feel overwhelming. My goal is to make this first conversation as helpful and pressure-free as possible. Here’s what we’ll cover:

Before We Meet:

  • You’ll book a time that works for you using my online calendar (or call my office)
  • I will send you an intake form from my case management software.  This is an electronic form, you can complete it on your computer or your phone.  No need to print anything out.
  • I will send you a Consultation Agreement through AdobeSign.  You will need to electronically sign this.
  • I will send you an invoice for $425.00, the amount of my consultation fee.
  • You have the option of sending me, via email, the most recent motion or order (if applicable).

During Your Consultation (60 minutes):

First I ask some preliminary questions – This is to help me clarify any information that you included on your intake form.

Next, I listen to you You’ll tell me what’s going on in your situation. I’m here to understand, not judge. Whether you’re just considering divorce, actively separating, or dealing with custody issues – I want to hear your story.  I may ask questions along the way, but this is your hour.

I’ll explain your options – Based on what you’ve shared, I’ll walk you through:

  • Next steps to take based on your specific situation.
  • What the process looks like in Sonoma County
  • Realistic timelines and what to expect
  • Required retainer

Finally, any other questions you have –  Again, this is your time. Ask me anything – about the process, my experience, next steps, costs, whatever is on your mind.

After Your Consultation:

  • No pressure, no hard sell
  • If you want to move forward, I’ll send you next steps
  • If you’re not ready or want to think about it, that’s completely fine
  • If I’m not the right fit, I’ll point you toward other resources

What Makes My Consultations Different:

  • I don’t rush you – you get my full attention
  • I explain both mediation AND litigation honestly (I’m not trying to push you toward one because it’s all I do)
  • I speak in plain English, not legal jargon
  • You’ll leave with clarity about your options, even if you don’t hire me
